An MR licence allows the holder to drive any rigid 2-axle vehicle, including trucks or buses, and to tow a trailer with a weight of no more than 9 tonnes (within GCM limits). It also applies to special purpose vehicles with a GVM of less than 15 tonnes, such as tractors or bob-tail prime movers.
Medium rigid licences are a popular choice for upgrading, covering a range of vehicles such as trucks and buses. With an MR licence, you can drive automatic and synchro manual vehicles.
The licence will include a “Condition B” restriction, allowing you to drive vehicles with automatic and synchromesh gearboxes but not those with Road ranger/Crash gearboxes (double clutching method). However, this is not typically a limitation, as Road ranger/Crash gearboxes are rarely used in Class MR vehicles.
Students will be eligible to receive their Medium Rigid vehicle licence upon successful completion of this training and evaluation program. The formal preparation and assessment typically take one day (ten hours) to two days (18 hours), depending on the student’s competency.
A Medium Rigid (MR) licence is a legal requirement for those wishing to drive a rigid truck with two axles and a GVM of 8 tonnes or more.
