Congratulations to Lucas, who passed his HR test at Zillmere with flying colours. A clean, confident drive on the day is the payoff for every practice run that came before it, and it is always good to see a plan come together at the test centre.

The Heavy Rigid class is a big step for any driver moving into serious heavy vehicle work, and it is one of the most common upgrades we deliver at Elite Truck and Car School. If you are working towards your own HR test, or you are a fleet operator getting a driver assessed, here is what the training and the test day actually involve.

What the HR licence is for

HR stands for Heavy Rigid. It is the heavy vehicle class built on a single rigid chassis, as opposed to a prime mover with trailer combinations such as HC and MC. Drivers often look at HR because it opens the door to a wider range of trucks in general freight, construction, waste, local delivery and civil work.

If you are unsure which class you can apply for with the licence you currently hold, check the current requirements with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) before you book anything. Eligibility depends on the licence class you already hold and how long you have held it, and it is worth confirming before you start training.

What HR training and assessment involve

Our Heavy Rigid (HR) licence training is one-on-one with an industry-experienced trainer, and the emphasis is on the habits that carry you through a working day, not just a short test route. On-road sessions cover:

• Pre-drive checks and cabin drills done the same way every time
• Steering, lane position and clearance in a big vehicle
• Gear selection and smooth progress, including non-synchromesh gearboxes
• Hazard awareness, intersections, roundabouts and busy suburban traffic
• Reversing and low-speed control where the load or the yard demands it

We run a modern fleet with automatic, synchromesh and non-synchromesh (crash box) gearboxes, so you can train in the type of truck you will actually be driving. Assessment follows the same standard. Our heavy vehicle driver assessment covers vehicle control, observation and road rule application, and you can use the training vehicle for your test, so the truck on test day is the truck you already know.

Test day at Zillmere

Lucas tested at Zillmere, one of the TMR centres our students use alongside Logan, Beenleigh, Strathpine, Redcliffe, Wynnum and Cleveland. Each centre has its own surrounds, speed zones and traffic patterns, so we build practice around the area you are booked into. Turning up knowing the roads, the signage and the likely hazards takes a lot of the nerves out of the day.
