MC Licence Upgrade from HR: On-Road Training and Assessment

MC Licence Upgrade from HR: On-Road Training and Assessment

Bharat Nayyar, known to everyone at the school as Ricky, was out on the road training and assessing Gurtej Singh in the MC vehicle, working through the MC licence upgrade from HR. One trainer, one driver, a multi-combination unit and a clear set of competencies to work through — that is how the upgrade is done.

For a driver who already holds a heavy rigid licence, MC is the biggest step left on the heavy vehicle ladder. It opens up B-double and multi-combination work: line haul, interstate freight and the longer runs that reward experience and licence class. Here is what the MC class covers, what the training and assessment involve, and what you need in place before you book.

What the MC licence class covers

MC stands for Multi Combination. It sits above Heavy Rigid (HR) and Heavy Combination (HC) and covers B-doubles and other multi-combination vehicles — a prime mover towing more than one trailer. Where an HR licence covers a heavy rigid truck and an HC licence adds a semi-trailer, MC is the configuration that carries the most freight per trip, which is why transport operators and fleet managers ask for it.

At ETACS the MC upgrade is delivered as the unit of competency TLIC4006 Drive multi-combination vehicle. TLIC4006 is a unit of competency, not a qualification: on completion you receive a Statement of Attainment, and the licence class itself is issued by the Department of Transport and Main Roads once its requirements are met. If you are weighing up pathways, our guide to MC truck licence eligibility in Queensland covers the class in more detail.

What the training and assessment involve

An MC session is not a driving lesson in the usual sense. It is a structured, one-on-one assessment against the unit’s performance criteria, with coaching in between. In the truck that means:

  • Vehicle control — managing a much longer, heavier combination in traffic, at intersections and when changing direction.
  • Hazard management — reading the road ahead, planning lane changes early and leaving yourself room to stop and turn.
  • Coupling and uncoupling — the pre-start checks and connections that have to be right every single time.

Because it is one-on-one, the trainer can stop, correct and repeat a task until the driver is doing it consistently. On the day Ricky was training Gurtej, that meant time on the road and time working through the practical elements of the multi-combination unit.

Entry requirements before you book

To start the MC upgrade you need to be at least 18 years old and to have held an HR or HC licence for at least 12 months. You will also complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment, and you need your own PPE — hi-vis and enclosed shoes — for the practical sessions.

Anything beyond that, including how the class is added to your licence, is set by TMR. Check the current requirements with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads before you book, or ask us and we will point you in the right direction.

Why drivers do the upgrade at ETACS

Elite Truck and Car School is a registered training organisation (RTO 45471) based at Waterford West, training drivers across Logan, Brisbane and South East Queensland. The practical reasons drivers give for doing the MC upgrade here:

  • One-on-one tuition, so the session is built around one driver’s gaps rather than a group’s average.
  • Trainers with industry experience who know what a loaded B-double actually does on a wet highway.
  • A modern fleet with automatic, synchromesh and non-synchro gearboxes, so you train in the configuration you will drive.
  • Training six days a week, and the option to use our training vehicle for your test.
  • Testing at TMR centres including Logan, Beenleigh, Zillmere, Strathpine, Redcliffe, Wynnum and Cleveland.

Employers and fleet operators also use us to keep existing driver skills current. If you already drive heavy vehicles and simply need your competency verified, we run heavy vehicle driver assessments in our own vehicles, and you can read more about the school on our about page.
