Truck Safety: Sharing the Road Safely with Heavy Vehicles

Every day, thousands of truck drivers travel Australia’s roads, delivering the goods that keep our country moving. Elite Truck and Car School’s message to every road user is simple: a little patience and awareness can save lives. If you can’t see the truck driver in their mirrors, chances are they can’t see you.
That is what sharing the road safely really means. Heavy vehicles are longer, heavier and slower to stop than a car, so the habits of the drivers around them matter just as much as the skill of the person behind the truck wheel. Whether you hold a car licence or you are stepping up through the licence classes, these six habits are worth revisiting.
Six habits that keep everyone safe around trucks
- Stay out of blind spots. If you can’t see the truck driver in their mirrors, chances are they can’t see you.
- Don’t cut in front of trucks. Heavy vehicles need significantly more distance to stop than cars.
- Give trucks room to turn. Trucks often need extra space when navigating corners and intersections.
- Overtake safely. Never take unnecessary risks when passing a heavy vehicle.
- Be patient. A few extra seconds could prevent a serious accident.
- Respect truck drivers. They’re doing an important job and deserve to get home safely, just like everyone else.
Why the space around a truck matters
Most close calls between cars and trucks come down to two things: visibility and stopping distance. A truck driver works from a cab with mirrors and, in many cases, cameras, but there are still large areas directly beside and behind the vehicle where a car simply disappears from view. Sitting in that space leaves the truck driver no way to know you are there.
Turning is the other pressure point. A truck swinging wide before a corner is not being careless; it needs that room to get the trailer around without mounting the kerb or clipping the vehicle waiting beside it. Leaving a gap at intersections costs you nothing and removes the risk entirely.
Patience behind a heavy vehicle is not just polite. On a two-lane road, a truck climbing a hill or waiting for a safe gap may hold you up for a short time, and an impatient overtake is where the danger sits. If you cannot see far enough ahead to complete the pass comfortably, wait.
Safe driving starts with quality training
At Elite Truck & Car School we believe safe driving starts with quality training, awareness and respect for everyone sharing our roads. Our trainers are industry experienced, and every lesson is one-on-one, so new drivers build their judgement in real traffic rather than in a group.
Our fleet covers automatic, synchromesh and non-synchromesh (crash box) gearboxes, and we train six days a week, Monday to Saturday. Students can also use the training vehicle for their test, which means the truck or car you practised in is the one you sit your assessment in. Testing is available at TMR centres including Logan, Beenleigh, Zillmere, Strathpine, Redcliffe, Wynnum and Cleveland.
For drivers heading into heavy vehicle work, that training continues past the licence. The Heavy Rigid (HR) class is where many drivers begin, followed by Heavy Combination (HC) and MC / B-Double. Drivers working under Basic or Advanced Fatigue Management can complete TLIF0005 Apply a Fatigue Risk Management System, a unit of competency delivered face-to-face at Waterford West with flexible scheduling including weekends and evenings.
Drivers who want the full qualification can work through the TLI31222 Certificate III in Driving Operations, a blended program of self-paced online theory with one-on-one on-road heavy vehicle assessment. Employers who need an existing driver checked can book a heavy vehicle driver assessment, and fleet operators can arrange driver verification (VOC).
Where to start
If you are a learner driver, a parent booking lessons, or an experienced driver ready for a heavier class, the first step is a conversation about where you are now and what you need next. Eligibility and licensing requirements change from time to time, so always confirm current rules with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
