Heavy Vehicle Driver Verification (VOC) in Logan

Heavy Vehicle Driver Verification (VOC) in Logan

Elite Truck and Car School is a nationally registered training organisation, RTO 45471, based at 3/40 Loganlea Road, Waterford West. The school trains and assesses car and heavy vehicle drivers across Logan, Brisbane and South East Queensland, and it also delivers Heavy Vehicle Driver Verification (VOC) for drivers who already hold a licence but need their current skills checked and documented.

Most people first call us because they want a licence. Verification of competency is the other half of the job. It suits a driver who has been off the road for a while, a driver stepping into a new role, or a fleet operator who wants a trained assessor to look at how one of their people actually handles a heavy vehicle. The licence proves the driver passed a test. Verification tells an employer what that driver can do now.

What heavy vehicle driver verification is

Verification of competency, usually shortened to VOC, is an assessment of a driver’s current skills against a unit of competency. An assessor from a registered training organisation travels with the driver, watches the work and makes a judgement against the unit. The outcome is a record the driver and the employer can keep on file.

What gets covered depends on the unit being verified, so the first step is a conversation about the vehicle, the freight task and what the employer needs evidence of. Ring us with those details and we will tell you what applies to your situation rather than guessing on your behalf.

It is worth being clear about the wording. A licence class such as HR or MC is a licence class, not a qualification. Units of competency sit inside qualifications — for example, TLIC4006 Drive multi-combination vehicle is a unit, and TLI31222 Certificate III in Driving Operations is the qualification it can sit within. The Certificate III in Driving Operations is delivered as a blend of self-paced online theory and one-on-one on-road heavy vehicle assessment over a 12 to 24 month self-paced period, fee-for-service with payment plans available.

Who asks for a VOC

  • Employers and fleet operators who want an independent check before putting a driver into a truck, a float or a B-Double.
  • Drivers returning to heavy vehicles after a break and wanting to confirm their skills are still where they should be.
  • Drivers moving between gearboxes — from an automatic or synchromesh truck to a non-synchromesh crash box, or the other way around.
  • Drivers preparing for the next class, who want a plain answer on what needs work first.

If you are unsure whether your employer needs verification, or whether a particular licence class requires anything else, check the current requirements with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). We will not put a number on a rule we have not been given.

How verification fits with training and assessment

Verification is one of several services at ETACS, and the pieces work well together. A driver who is not quite ready for verification can book heavy vehicle driver assessments first and get the weak spots fixed. A driver who is ready can go straight to verification.

The fleet matters here. ETACS runs modern vehicles with automatic, synchromesh and non-synchromesh gearboxes, so the truck you are assessed in can be matched to the truck you actually drive. For anyone heading for the top class, the TLIC4006 Drive multi-combination vehicle course covers vehicle control, hazard management and coupling and uncoupling, and it requires a minimum of 18 years of age, an HR or HC licence held for at least 12 months, a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment and your own PPE — hi-vis and enclosed shoes.

If you are working towards that upgrade, our article on MC licence upgrade from HR walks through the on-road training and assessment side in more detail.

Why drivers and fleets book with ETACS

Training and assessment here are one-on-one. An industry-experienced trainer sits beside you, works at your pace and tells you plainly what is working and what is not. We run six days a week, Monday to Saturday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, which helps drivers fitting sessions around shifts. Learners can also use the training vehicle for their test, and testing is available at TMR centres including Logan, Beenleigh, Zillmere, Strathpine, Redcliffe, Wynnum and Cleveland.

For drivers who need fatigue management as well, TLIF0005 Apply a fatigue risk management system is delivered face to face at Waterford West with digital Statements of Attainment issued after completion. It is aimed at heavy vehicle drivers working under Basic or Advanced Fatigue Management, and needs a Class C licence or higher, a USI and basic LLN.
